Filming - Rough Cut 1

Rough Cut 1 from Luke Tiplady on Vimeo.

This is my first rough cut for my music video of 'The Hardest Thing in The World'. Towards the end of the cut there are some gaps in the footage that I intend to fill, however didn't have time to do as I wanted an edit on my blog showing the footage I have so far. The greatest difficulty I currently have with editing is timing the footage with the audio, especially with the drum beat at 00:30 and the guitar strums at 01:00. However, I feel as if this could be easily improved on with closer editing. I am also concerned whether I have 'overdone' the use of superimposition or not, as this was employed as an ode to the 80s/90s era music videos, particularly The Stone Roses.

  1. I like the idea that the narrative is basically of a guy who is inspired to pick up a guitar because of the Stone Roses, but I think you need to make more of that aspect of it in the second half of the video - a lot more shots of him playing the guitar in a range of places. I really don't like the fade to black at 01:11 and the jump to the house - it's very jarring.

It would be nice if you could get a shot, before he goes back to the house, of him having a revelation about how he could be like the SR.

Some of the editing is very weak - you need to be a lot tighter about hitting the beat (for example the cuts on "hey hey hey", which need to be more consistent in my opinion) - but you are aware of this; as you identify, it will take a more focused approach to editing in the fine cut.

A shame your actor couldn't keep his face straight, but not much to be done about that.

Some of the shots are held for too long, whilst others are too short.

With the superimposition shots, although I think these work in the way you intend, the emphasis needs to be more on the actor than the band. This is particularly the case at the back end, when you seem to be relying more on archive footage.

With the "split screen" effect, either make more of this or lose it - it just looks like it's there for the sake of it. You could, of course, make it a feature of the end of the video, as you seem to be doing, but you'd need to shoot some pick-ups.

Overall, at the moment I would put this upper L2, about 20/40, but that's in it's unfinished state. With tighter editing, slightly more adventurous camerawork and a more cohesive narrative, should be able to get it into mid-upper L3.
